Pilot Plumix

I have a few new things to share with this everyone! The first being the Pilot Plumix. I read a review of this pen at Unposted and I ran right out to Target to buy it! I'll be honest, I hate it.

Things I hate about this pen:
1. The color of the ink. The blue is a weird washed out color on plain white paper, but a nicer color of blue when it is on the cream Piccadilly paper. But I don't like it. Plus the fact it has blue ink is a little misleading as it is a smoky black pen body.

2. The nib is too wide. But I can't figure out how to use it in a way that takes advantage of the wideness. I prefer a finer point.

3. Overall, the shape of the pen is unappealing. The cap also twists on, which I found to be irritating and I kept forgetting and tried to pull it off several times.

4. When I inserted the ink cartridge, I was somehow was doing it wrong. And I ended up breaking a plastic piece in there. I could see it was cracked through the barrel. To the Plumix's credit, the pen still worked fine.

Now aside from the pen you may be asking yourself, "what in the heck is that pen sitting on?" It is an awesome, creepy and unique nightlight I bought when visiting Muscatine. Click here to visit the maker's blog! I linked to one post about Cracked in the Head Nightlights, but if you scroll down the page you can see more of her work. I want to buy them all! Check it out!

  1. Good to know, I will steer clear id I come across this pen. Thanks so much for the link to the "Sweet Repose" blog, I really like the nightlights and the whole blog! I am starting a new blog with my other favorite thing aside from pens which is antiques, I think one of her lights would make a great addition to my macabre decor :).

  3. From what I've read that pen has an italic nib. If that's the case, it's meant to be held at a slight angle to create line variations as you write. Check out fountainpennetwork.com for more information on how to use a pen like this. There's a handwriting subforum with pinned threads on the subject: http://tinyurl.com/n2dvky

Also, since it's a refillable pen, you can use any ink color you want. Use a syringe or an eyedropper to refill the cartridges with any bottled ink (plenty of that to be had online).

  4. If you don't want it, I will totally buy it from you. I want one, and I've checke three different targets for it in Alabama--NONE of them have it. BLEGH

  6. The Plumix is an excellent pen! One just has to know how to use it! The Plumix has a calligraphy type nib in that it is flat and broad. However unlike calligraphy nibs which can only be pulled the Plumix nib can be pushed as well. This allows it to be used as what it was intended for, a broad tipped pen. Such pens used to be used world wide up until a few generations ago. The ballpoint pen was the death of such elegant penmanship! When used correctly the Plumix will produce a beautiful contrast of thin and thick lines.

To use the Plumix first tilt the paper at about 45 degrees, like we were taught in school. Next hold the Plumix so that the tip is at about a 15 to 20 degree angle off 90 degrees to the lines on the paper. When you can naturally push up at the set angle and make a thin line then the pen is held correctly. Now just write, or better yet, print as you normally would, perhaps allowing for a slightly larger hand than normal. Once you get the hang of it it's a beauty to write with. So practice at it for a while. And if you don't like the blue ink then by all means dump it down the sink and use an eye dropper and fill the washed out cartridge with an ink that you like!

After you do all this and you still don't like the Plumix send me an email at theoldgeezer@live.com asking for my mailing addy and I'll be more than happy to relieve you of such a terrible pen!

  7. Sorry but, I love this pen!!!! the color is the coolest blue. It makes your handwriting look old school without having to change the way you write. :)

  8. I tried to give a positive comment about this pen. I love this pen, I have bought several of them. It seems that you only post negative views or at least not ones that match your liking. :)

  9. Just bought the Plumix at Target -- $5.99 with only 1 cartridge -- which I thought was a bit pricey. Also disappointed with the blue ink -- they should have put 2 cartridges with the pen and made at least 1 of them black -- so you could see both. Writing-wise, the pen feels really good in the hand: the flat surfaces on the lower part of the pen are comfy to hold, especially if you tend to press hard when writing.
Had to go online to www.namiki.com to get cartridges, but followed ChrisCP's advice and will fill my on in the future. Ordering from Namiki is pretty cheap though -- 12 cartridges for $4.20 -- $.35/each! Hard to beat that and you don't get all inky. Using the pen really makes you want to write more letters, notes, journals, diaries, etc.

  11. I stirred up a storm with this review, didn't I! I think this pen and I weren't meant to be from the git-go. I cracked it before I even wrote with it and that surely colored my review. I wrote with it a bit the other day to see if I liked it yet, and I still don't. It just isn't for me. But I appreciate that everyone else loves it. I am used to being the opposite when it comes to pens. I had a set of pens from a dollar store that I thought were the best thing ever that everyone else hated. But I bought 10 packs. I am down to my last few, and I cherish them!

  12. JetPens.com carries the Plumix, and its narrower cousin, the Penmanship. And, as someone noted, the cartridges are available in a variety of colors, and affordably.

And I love this pen so much I want to marry it.

(You cracked it?!? Don't grip the pen... let it flow...)

  13. I totally agree with you; wish I'd read your review before buying the pen. They didn't have the Varsity, so I took a chance on this. Fuhgeddaboutit.
